January promises to be explosive

It is quite possible that in all the hype of Mayweather/Pacquiao you could have forgotten that other fights are actually taking place and this month sees 3 especially good ones.

On January 23rd on HBO’s Boxing After Dark (B.A.D) two of boxing’s biggest prospects will again display their skills on the same card as they work towards an eventual showdown.

Juanma Lopez (27-0-0) vacates his WBO super bantamweight title moving up to featherweight to take on Steven Luevano for the WBO featherweight title. In his last fight Lopez,26, laboured to a 12 round decision over Rogers Mtagwa after he foolishly decided to brawl with the Tanzanian instead of using his superior boxing skills.

But Yuriokis Gamboa(16-0-0) is looking to show that the tough Tanzanian is not as hard a match up as Lopez made of it and has promised to knock out the African, when they face off on the same night.

Gamboa, 28,  had a glorious amateur career in Cuba winning an Olympic gold medal in 2004, but defected from the country to turn pro. First fighting in Germany and now the US, Gamboa like Lopez is still undefeated and has stopped 14 of his 16 opponents. So when the two finally meet it will be explosive especially as both seem to have bricks for hands!

The following week on  HBO’s World Championship Boxing, experienced  ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley(46-5-0) faces André Berto(25-0-0). Mosley,38, hasn’t fought since stopping Antonio Margarito last January whilst Berto took a unanimous decision over Juan Urango in May.

The fight will see two fast and power fighters go head to head in a unification fight as Mosley is the WBA ‘super champion’ whilst Berto holds the WBC version of the welterweight crown.

There has been words exchanged between the two especially over Twitter and Berto won’t take kindly to Mosley openly stating he is looking past the 25-year-old so this one promises to offer fireworks.
